“Rather, a new movement will begin which will turn the Zionists’ day into a dark night,” Khatami said while addressing a large congregation of worshippers on Tehran University Campus here on Friday.

“By these savage moves that the Zionists showed, they actually lost a part of the occupied Palestine and now Gaza which is stretched on an area measuring 304 square kilometers and with 500 thousand residents is practically under the authority of the legal and popular government of Hamas and it has turned into an unconquerable stronghold. Hundreds of thousands of people in the region are armed and the Zionist regime will no longer be able to re-occupy the region,” he added.

“We hope that other occupied regions will be set free and that we will witness demise and annihilation of this occupying regime,” the cleric stated.

He further pointed to Israel’s humiliating defeat in the war against Lebanon in the summer of 2006, and said that the Winograde report on Israel’s failure in the 33-day war on Lebanon has explicitly acknowledged the failure of the political and military objectives of the Zionist regime.

“Yet, in the report they skillfully tried to put the blame of their military defeat on the government of the Zionist regime, acquitting the army and trying to show it is still powerful,” Khatami pointed out, adding, “But the reality is the prime minister, government and army of the regime failed in the 33-day war.”

Khatami described the Zionist regime’s failure in the war on Lebanon as an earthquake, adding that Israelis’ brutal attack on Gaza was an “aftershock” of the same failure.
