Romania supports Albania’s efforts to join the European Union (EU), Romania’s parliament speaker said on Tuesday.

“Progress of Albania in the fields of judiciary, parliamentary reform and public administration is a testimony that your path toward the EU is irreversible,” Valeriu Zgonea, speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, told reporters after a meeting with his Albanian counterpart, Ilir Meta.

Meta, for his part, thanked Romania for supporting Tirana’s bid for European integration.

Albania formally applied for EU membership in 2009. Following successful general elections in June 2013, the European Commission, the executive body of the EU, has recommended candidate status for the West Balkan nation. A decision on the candidate status is expected at an EU summit in December.
