The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to pass a resolution requiring full access of humanitarian aid into war torn Syria.

The resolution demands that the Syrian government and opposition groups provide immediate access to allow aid to be delivered to millions of people in desperate need.

Russia insisted that the threat of sanctions be dropped from the text. Instead, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will report to the council every 30 days on the progress of humanitarian aid.

There’s also a threat to take “further steps” if the demands of the resolution aren’t fulfilled. Syrians in Damascus have given a mixed reaction to the deal. But lawmakers in the Syrian parliament have been reacting positively, with general support for the stance taken by Russia.
