There is no military solution for Libyan crisis, AU commisioner says

African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui underlined Wednesday in Addis Ababa that there no military solution was possible to the Libyan crisis, favouring a peaceful solution through inter-Libyan dialogue.
“We should say clearly that no military solution is possible to the current crisis in Libya. We should also encourage all those who seek a peaceful solution and stand clearly against those who are impeding peace efforts,” said Chergui in his opening address at the 2nd Meeting of the International Contact Group on Libya.
“It’s important that all the involved parties make efforts because we have political and moral obligation to invite the different parties to engage in peace and dialogue process in Libya and make terrorists lay down arms,” he added.
The commissioner for Peace and Security also insisted on the importance of restoring peace in the country, and urged the different parties in Libya to opt for dialogue in order to reach a lasting solution.

Chergui emphasized the need to support the United Nations-sponsored dialogue and the efforts of Libya’s neighbouring countries, the African Union and the international community, and hoped that all these efforts would help to launch dialogue between all the parties in Libya.

For his part, the head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and Special Representative to the AU, Haile Menkerios called to “encourage a political and peaceful solution in Libya,” adding that the neighbouring countries “are playing a very important role in this regard.”
