In a spirit of unity, the members of Security Council expressed their disappointment for the failure of South Sudanese talks, and expressed their deep concern at the ongoing fighting and violence.
The UNSC was briefed by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan and South Sudan Haile Menkerios, where he presented an assessment of the failure of the talks in Addis Ababa between the South Sudanese parties.
French Permanent Representative to the UN, who is the President of the Security Council for the current month Ambassador Francois Delattre told the press after the briefing, that the members of the Council, reiterated the need for a political settlement of the conflict and our call to the parties for a genuine and full commitment in that regard, without delay.
“We recalled our readiness to support efforts and initiatives to reach such a result,” he added.
In this framework, Delattre reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to the full implementation of resolution 2206, and reiterated their support to UNMISS, which discharges its mandate in very difficult conditions “as we all know,” he said.
