France condemns attack on Red Cross convoy in northern Mali

imgThe French Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned “a terrorist attack” against a humanitarian convoy belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in northern Mali on Monday.
One person was killed in the attack that took place in the volatile Gao region of the country, where radical Islamist rebels and Tuareg tribesmen took over the area until French forces intervened in January 2013 and pushed most of them out of Mali.
Guerrilla-style attacks are still frequent in northern Mali, mostly by groups of raiders coming there from southern Libya.
“France praises the courage of humanitarian workers who are bringing assistance to the civilian populations around the world, often at the risk of their lives,” the French statement said, condemning Monday’s attack.
