A presidential elite guard who organized a coup a week in Burkina Faso refuses to disarm in line with a West African peace agreement, the army said Monday.

The peace agreement brokered by the regional bloc ECOWAS is “in a bind” the Chief of Staff of the Army said, denouncing the powerful RER guard unit for “refusing to follow the disarmament process creating incidents and attack the personnel responsible for this mission. “

Interim Cabinet reinstalled Burkina Friday dissolved the RER guard, which is loyal to the deposed dictator veteran Blaise Compaore, whose officers held interim president, Michel Kafando and Prime Minister Isaac Zida September 16.

The unit said a coup and installed the next day Diendéré Gilbert, former chief of staff Compaoré, as the new leader.

The Chief of Staff of the Army has also denounced the “ambiguous behavior of General Gilbert Diendéré” without giving details.

A source in the RER told AFP that the disarmament process has been blocked as a promise by the government to ensure the safety of the rebels and their families has not been respected.
