UN chief calls on Libyan parties to reach deal on govt of national agreement

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday reiterated its call to the Libyan parties to enter into political dialogue and sign an agreement that will lead to the formation of a national consensus government.
“Only a government of national concord unite Libyans and enable them, with the support of the international community to address these challenges,” said a statement issued by the spokesperson for Mr. Ban.
Libya has witnessed a political process frayed after the 2011 upheaval that ousted its leader Muammar Gaddafi. The country is now juggle two rival parliaments and governments.
Internationally recognized Parliament of Libya of Representatives (HOR) on Monday decided to extend its mandate beyond its expiry date on October 20
A spokesman for the parliament said lawmakers had amended the constitutional declaration and the HOR to power after a new body is elected.
The UN brokered several rounds of dialogue between the parties in conflict since last September, but the clashes continued despite a truce agreed by the warring factions.
“The Secretary-General remains committed to supporting the Libyan people through his Special Representative and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya,” the statement said.
