Libya unity government hits snag

Tripoli – Efforts to form a unity government of Libya are stumbling over the defense portfolio, an official said Wednesday that the internationally recognized parliament established a new period of one line-up.
Libya has been in chaos since the ouster in 2011 of long-serving dictator Muammar Gaddafi, with two rival administrations and armed groups fighting for control of the oil-rich country.
An alliance of militias, including the Islamists overran Tripoli in August 2014, establishing its own government and parliament and causing the administration recognized to flee eastward away from the country.
Last month, Parliament recognized rejected a 32-member unity government announced as part of an agreement aegis of the UN, saying it was too big and setting a deadline of 10 days for a law smaller.
On Monday, Prime Minister-designate Fayez al-Sarraj said a Presidential Council supported by the United Nations responsible for the formation of the unity government needed an extra week to reach agreement on a list of the new cabinet.
Parliament has recognized, which is based in the eastern city of Tobruk, said Wednesday on its website that it had voted to give the board “until Sunday to form a unity government.”
The board is composed of nine members of rival factions led by Libya and Sarraj, a businessman, met in Morocco to try to find a government, according to UN envoy Martin Kobler.
