UN appoints new deputy head of Libya mission

The United Nations has appointed a new deputy head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to succeed Jordan Ali H. Al-Za’tari.
Maria do Valle Ribeiro is to take over from Al-Za’tari. Ribeiro has around 30 years’ experience in the UN and working in international NGOs and has served as the UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya.
Al-Za’tari, will take up his new post as UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria however is still awaiting approval from the government of President Bashar Al-Assad.
Ribeiro will join Special Representative Head of United Nations Support Mission in Libya Martin Kobler who has worked in brokering a peace deal in Libya between the warring parties to adhere to the Peace Agreement that was signed last year in Morocco but is yet to be legitimised.
