Egypt’s foreign minister Sameh Shoukry arrived in New York City Tuesday night to meet with the next secretary-general of the United Nations Antonio Guterres after concluding a four day visit to Washington, the ministry’s spokesperson said.

In an official statement on Wednesday, the spokesperson said that Shoukry will dicuss with Guterres “various issues on the agenda of the United Nations and the Security Council as well as the relationship between Egypt and the international organization.”

Guterres, the Portuguese secretary-general-designate, will assume his role on 1st of January 2017 for a five-year term.

The statement added that the FM “will also present [to the secretary-general-designate] Egypt’s comprehensive vision for United Nations’ role in international peace and security, economic growth and development, and peace-building and counter-terrorism issues.”

Egypt holds a two-year term as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council, which began early this year.
