Iraq bomber kills two at meeting of sheikhs: police

At least two people were killed and six wounded when a suicide bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives attacked a gathering of Sunni Arab tribal sheikhs south of Baghdad on Wednesday, police sources said. The bomber infiltrated a meeting of leaders of the al-Kardani Sunni Arab tribe in Iskandariya, a volatile Sunni Arab town in an area known as the “triangle of death” 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, one police source.

It was not immediately known if tribal leaders were among those killed.

Another police source in Iskandariya said a car bomb also exploded outside the meeting but few other details were available.

Tribal leader groups have sprung up in other areas of Iraq after Sunni Arab sheikhs in western Anbar province last year began forming neighborhood police units to drive out Sunni Islamist al Qaeda fighters.
