One Russian serviceman killed in Chechnya blasts

One Russian serviceman was killed and ten others injured in a series of blasts across the North Caucasus republic of Chechnya on Thursday, RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday, citing a police source. One serviceman died and two others were hospitalized in the first explosion targeted at a column of troops, which occurred at 13:20 Moscow time (0920 GMT) Thursday.

Two hours later, a landmine exploded when a group of police officers were en route to put out a fire. One of the officers was injured.

Another group of policemen arrived at the scene later and seven of them were injured when a second bomb exploded.

Attacks by militants occur frequently in Russia’s North Caucasus republics, although the active phase of the military campaign in Chechnya officially ended several years ago.
