Jury Out in Spy Trial

Daniel James, 45, was working for General David Richards, head of Nato forces in Afghanistan, when he was arrested in December 2006.

James, a salsa teacher in civilian life, is alleged to have sent coded emails to the Iranian military attaché in Kabul. The suspect has rejected all accusations.

The Old Bailey has heard that he was found with sensitive documents about troop movements and munitions, stored on a computer memory stick, when he was arrested.

Pictures of a Predator spy plane were found in his room, jurors have been told, but James claimed the only “Predator” he had heard of was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He said the emails were part of an attempt to set up a gas deal between Iran and Afghanistan, while the secret documents were given to him to translate.

James, of Cliff Road, denied charges of collecting and communicating information useful to an enemy under the Official Secrets Act, as well as willful misconduct in public office.
