If Croatia Drops Genocide Suit, Serbia Will Too

zx500y290_6920157As a solution for the border problem with Serbia, at Danube River, Serbian PM sees drawing it in the middle of the river.

Before meeting with Croatian Prime Minster Ivo Sanader, Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic said that Serbia will invite Croatia to drop its lawsuit against Serbia for genocide and if this is accepted, Serbia would drop its counter-lawsuit straight away, Belgrade Vecernje novosti daily writes on Thursday.

– One of the most important issues is this lawsuit. This is a great obstacle in the development of good relations, therefore we will incite Croatia to withdraw its genocide lawsuit against Serbia. In this case, Serbia would be prepared to withdraw its counter-lawsuit straight away. This is a possibility of normalising relations between the two countries and clearly show that we have removed this obstacle, as neighbour, inherited from the newer past and imposed because of political motives – Cvetkovic told the paper.

Assessing that the entire region accessing the European Union largely depends on the co-operation between Serbia and Croatia, Cvetkovic said that better understanding and collaboration of Belgrade and Zagreb were the conditions for the development of economic and political ties between the countries and a guarantee of the European perspective winning over the past.

Border at Danube River

When asked if he was planning to raise the issue of defining the state border with Croatia, upon meeting his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader, Cvetkovic replied that this was an important issue and that Serbia would constructively approach its solution.

– We expect that we will encounter understanding of the Croatian side for our view concerning the border at the Danube River and that we will finally move forward. Our proposal is for the border to go along the middle of the Danube – Cvetkovic said.
