PARIS -France called on Moldova on Wednesday to respect the rule of law including the right to protest following post-election clashes between opposition demonstrators and police.
“We are very attached to the respect by all Moldovan political forces of the principles of rule of law, democracy and fundamental freedoms, including the right to protest and to assemble,” foreign ministry spokesman Frederic Desagneaux said.
“The violence is not compatible with these principles,” he said.
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has accused neighboring Romania – a member of the European Union – of involvement in the riots that shook the capital Chisinau.
Voronin also warned he was ready to resort to force to end the protests that erupted after communists won parliamentary elections Sunday.
