Moldova’s Parliament failed to elect a new president for the third time this year. MPs from the Communist Party left the session after refusing to vote for the only candidate for president – Marian Lupu, leader of the Democratic Party.
The communists “will not take part in this political farce”, they pointed out.
The ruling Alliance for European Integration has 53 seats in the Parliament but 61 seats are needed so as a president to be elected. The communists have 48 seats.
In conformity with the Moldavian legislation new election will be held after thirty days. If the second vote also fails, the Parliament will have to be dissolved and a date for early election will be fixed.
New election could be held not earlier than the autumn of 2010.
