The United States do not recognize the legality and the results of the presidential vote in Abkhazia, held on December 12.
This is according to U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly.
He said that Washington “regrets” that the decision was made to hold the elections at all in the “secessionist pro-Russian region of Georgia”.
Kelly also stated that the United States “supports Georgia in its internationally recognized borders”.
Abkhazia and South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia last year. Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela have so far recognized them as independent states.
