Bulgaria’s ruling party the Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, unanimously elected Prime Minister Boiko Borisov as its leader at a conference on Sunday, as expected.
The party was founded around Borisov. But even though he has been known as the party’s de-facto leader, he was unable to become its official leader until now since his previous post of mayor of Sofia barred him from taking the position.
Until now, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov has held the post. He was elected GERB’s deputy on Sunday.
At the meeting, Borisov urged party delegates not to become complacent, and work every day as if the party were facing elections. He urged members to continue to support the government’s efforts to fight corruption.
