Bulgaria and Romania’s EU accession in January 2007 was accompanied by a monitoring mechanism aiming to guide those countries’ progress in the field of law enforcement, but Croatia should join the Union without such a tool, Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Stefan Fule said.
Croatia is approaching the finishing line in its EU membership talks, but more steps still need to be taken in a number of difficult fields – particularly the judiciary, public administration, corruption and minority rights.
“Croatia has made excellent progress in recent months and we are very much in the final stage of accession negotiations. I cannot see any issue or challenge that Croatia won’t be able to overcome with the assistance of the European Commission,” Fule said.
