European Union foreign ministers have agreed to grant official EU candidate status to Montenegro, the fourth former Yugoslav republic to take this step towards European integration.
“We have given the green light for Montenegro for candidate status,” Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere was cited by the AP as saying on Tuesday.
The formal decision will be taken on when EU heads of state and government meet in Brussels later this week.
After Montenegro is granted official status, it will join Croatia, Macedonia on the list of official candidate countries, though accession talks will still take several years to complete once they are launched.
