Kosovo’s government and the main opposition party have reached agreement on a presidential candidate, staving off fears that the government might collapse.
Atifete Jahjaga, the deputy director of Kosovo police, has been named as the new candidate after several rounds of talks on Wednesday night between the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, its coalition partner New Kosovo Alliance, AKR, and the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, led by American Ambassador to Pristina Christopher Dell.
Jahjaga is new to the political scene, and it is unlikely that she will serve out her full mandate, as the parties agreed to hold new presidential elections within 18 months.
