EU not happy about Albania’s local election

Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule on Tuesday in Brussels pronounced Albania’s May 8 local elections for Tirana “not good”.

“The elections in Tirana were not good, as they demonstrated beyond doubt that the electoral framework needs to be reformed,” Fule told a joint press conference with the Albanian foreign and EU integration ministers, after a meeting of the Stabilization and Association council between Albania and the EU.

“It is time for political forces in Albania to overcome the political stalemate and return to a level of political dialogue that would allow the proper functioning of key democratic institutions,” Fule added.

Albania’s May 8 local elections were considered key to the country’s EU future, following a two-year political crisis that has stopped the reform process dead in its tracks.
