An Italian company in partnership with the city will invest €73 million in order to turn Skopje’s communal waste landfill into a modern recycling facility.The public-private partnership deal that the city signed with the Italian consortium, FCL AMBIENTE SRL and UNIECO SCC COOP, aims to cut the amount of waste deposited in the landfill.
Some €73 million will be invested over the next four to five years in the project, which intends to transform communal waste into energy, fuel, and raw materials.
“The city will finally get a modern waste disposal site. The current landfill will be sealed and a new, modern facility will be constructed on the spot,” says Skopje Mayor Koce Trajanovski.
The Italian consortium will own 80 percent of the new joint venture and will operate the Drisla waste disposal facility under a 35-year concession contract.
“Our goal is to transform Drisla into an industrial facility for production of electricity, and use 70 per cent of the waste,” a representative of the consortium, Domenico Feracoli said.
The city will get 20 per cent of the annual profit of the facility, to match its 20 per cent investment in the modernization.
If need be, the facility will also be able to produce heat for the city’s communal heating grid.
The outdated facility at Drisla is considered a major pollutant of nearby rivers and underground waters.
