Macedonia hopes for EU accession after peaceful elections

Macedonia, an EU candidacy country since 2005, has boosted its chance of accession after a peaceful election.

The interior minister Gordan Jankuloska said, “We’ve probably had the best and cleanest elections so far.

“We should all be proud because Macedonia showed its place is in the European Union.”

The country’s opposition group, the social democrats, joined the election, after boycotting parliament for two months.

EU enlargement commissioner Štefan Füle said the opposition’s participation was crucial for Macedonia’s candidacy.
