Bosnia Arrests Serb Fighter Over Bihac Killings

Former military policeman Zeljko Stanarevic was arrested on suspicion of having participating in the killings of Bosniak civilians in the north-western Bihac municipality.

The Bosnian state prosecution said that Stanarevic, a former military policeman with the Bosnian Serb Army’s 15th Bihac Brigade, was arrested on Tuesday for alleged crimes against humanity.

“He is suspected of participating in the taking of imprisoned civilians from the Centre for Public Safety in [the village of] Ripac and their killings at [the nearby village of] Hrgar along with other members of the military police of Bosnian Serb Army,” the prosecution said in a statement.

The prosecution said that the bodies of those who were killed were thrown into a pit at Bezdana in Hrgar, where the remains of 83 people were found in 1997.

Stanarevic was arrested by Bosnia’s State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) in Piskavica in Banja Luka.

“The prosecution, along with police personnel, are continuing activities to find and arrest other people who participated in this war crime,” the statement said.
