At least four people were killed and more than 20 others wounded Wednesday by mortar shells which rebels fired into central Damascus during the inauguration of President Bashar al-Assad.
The four were killed when mortars exploded at the Damascus’ popular marketplace of Shalaan and nearby streets, local media reported.
Several other mortar shells rained down in residential areas in Damascus just as the president was delivering his inauguration speech, in which he emphasized that countering terrorism will persist during his third 7-year term.
The rebels apparently shelled the capital with a fresh round of mortars to undermine the president’s speech.
