Kenya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Algeria to promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of oil, gas and power. The agreement was signed by Kenya’s Foreign Affairs and International Trade Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and Algieria’s Foreign Minister, Ramtane Lamamr. It is aimed to improve and stimulate economic and industrial development in both countries.
Ms. Mohamed said “As Kenya looks forward to commercial exploitation of its oil resources, we look forward to learning from Algeria’s expertise, including in the drawing up of appropriate legal frameworks and capacity building to enable us to take charge of our hydrocarbon resources right from the onset.”
She encouraged Algerian investors to explore opportunities for investment in the area of oil and to learn from Kenya’s experience in geothermal energy production. The agreement was signed in the presence of Kenya’s President Kenyatta who arrived in Algiers on Tuesday (February 24) for a three day state visit to Algeria at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
