Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will brief African Union (AU) leaders on continent’s peace and security issues during the upcoming 30th AU summit, according to the pan African block.
Mourad Ben Dhiab, Secretary General of the African Union Commission (AUC), while briefing members of the media on the preparations of the summit on Wednesday disclosed that al-Sisi is expected to brief the assembly of AU heads of state, which is scheduled to take place on Jan. 28 and 29, on the continent’s peace and security issues.
Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is also President of the AU Peace and Security Council for the month of January 2018, will present a report on the activity of the peace and Security Council and the state of peace and security in the African continent, according to Ben Dhiab.
The Egyptian President will be accompanied by Smail Chergui, AUCommissioner for Peace and Security, in presenting AU’s flagship project “silencing the guns by 2020.”
President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou, who is also chairperson of the AU High Level Committee on Libya, is also expected to present the third and final peace and security report for the AU assembly of heads of state and governments regarding developments in the North African nation.
The 30th AU summit, being held under the theme of “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation,” was kicked off on Monday with the 35th ordinary session of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) at the headquarters of the pan-African bloc in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
The Executive Council of the summit, comprising AU member states’ foreign ministers, is scheduled to take place from Jan. 25 to 26 based on the agenda prepared by the PRC meeting with appropriate recommendations for consideration.
