Russian Rumour-Mongering Causes Fear of War in Transnistria

Russian television stations and Moscow’s local mouthpieces have been promoting unsubstantiated theories about an imminent attack on Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria from neighbouring Ukraine.

Fears have grown in recent days in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria about a possible military attack, after pro-Russian television stations, the dominant media force in the Kremlin-backed separatist territory, broadcast unsubstantiated claims that Ukrainian forces were preparing to mount an attack.

Maria Roibu, the director of the Alexandru cel Bun high school in Tighina, the second largest city in Transnistria, told BIRN that people are anxious in the separatist region because of what they are watching on Russian-language television.

“All the news is that Ukraine will invade Transnistria. People are not calm at all. There is constant talk on TV that the Ukrainians will attack Transnistria. So it’s clearly a tense situation,” Roibu said.

The high school director also said that the Transnistrian authorities are also talking about an imminent attack from Ukraine, which directly borders the breakaway region.
