UN: The Middle East is on the brink of an inevitable disaster, this is not an exaggeration

The United Nations Special Representative for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, expressed concern about the current situation in the Middle East, calling it “on the brink of an inevitable disaster.” She emphasized that “it is not an exaggeration” to say that there is no military solution that can ensure security for either side.

These remarks come amid intense clashes between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, which escalated overnight, representing one of the most intense bombardments since the conflict began almost a year ago.

The UN mission, UNIFIL, which has monitored the Israeli-Lebanese border since 1978, currently includes around 10,000 soldiers and 800 civilians. Last month, three UNIFIL soldiers were slightly injured in an explosion in southern Lebanon. Over nearly 50 years of its existence, more than 300 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives in this region.
