European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said it was up to Greece to decide whether it should stay in the euro area or not and not to the authorities in the monetary union.
“We would like them to stay… in the end it depends on them,” he said.
He added that it was in Greece’s interest to stay in the euro.
“When you are a member of the euro area, like a member of any club, you have to respect the rules and it is up to them to decide if they want or not to keep their position in the euro area.”
