UN could allow Serbian war criminals to serve sentences in their country

imgThe UN secretary-general has asked the Hague Tribunal to examine the possibility of Serbian war crimes convicts serving their sentences in their home country.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic asked the UN on April 9 to allow all Serbian citizens convicted by the Hague Tribunal to serve their sentences in Serbia.

“Serbia is ready to accept international monitoring and offer firm guarantees that the convicts will not be given early release without the permission of the Tribunal,” Dacic said in the letter.

However the final decision, according to the ICTY’s rules, can only be made by the UN Security Council.
