Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Congratulates Guatemalan President

A0136842.jpgTEHRAN (Fars News Agency) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here on Monday felicitated Alvaro Colom on his election as Guatemala’s president.

In his message, Ahmadinejad expressed the hope that Iranian and Guatemalan officials would utilize all the potentials existing on both sides to further expand relations, deepen friendly bonds and bolster cooperation, a statement released by the Presidential Press Office said.

In another development last Wednesday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned of a murder plot against him which may prevent him from going to Guatemala next month.

The information was received very recently, Chavez told a press conference, saying the plot puts his planned attendance at the inauguration ceremony of Guatemalan President-elect Alvaro Colom “at risk.”

He accused Luis Posada Carriles, a former staff of the US Central Intelligence Agency, of involvement in the conspiracy, saying the US government was backing the plot.

The US side has not responded to Chavez’s accusations.
