“Reza Azimyan and Hassan Farsi were on their way between Herat and Islam Qala border town on Wednesday afternoon when unknown armed men took them away to unknown location,” Ahmadi told Xinhua via telephone.

Both the abducted people were businessmen and working for an Iranian road construction company building Torghundi highway in the province, he added.

No group or individuals have claimed responsibility, he said.

However, he hinted at involvement of criminal gangs in the kidnapping, adding the mentioned businessmen could have been kidnapped for ransom.

Last week, three western aid workers, all females, were killed by Taliban insurgents in Logar province south of Afghan capital Kabul while some months ago a Chinese employee was kidnapped in Wardak province west of Afghan capital and was set free after a month in captivity.
