The current conflict in the breakaway Georgian region of south Ossetia started last week when Georgia began military action against South Ossetia, killing 10 Russian peacekeepers to take control of the Russian-backed region.

The Russian army quickly overwhelmed the forces of its small US-backed neighbor and Moscow’s troops stepped into Georgia.

The Georgian conflict has had serious international consequences.
