TEHRAN (FNA)- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Saturday insisted on the need to institutionalize party system in the country as he said party system is the need of modern world.
The cleric said political parties can play a key role in giving ordinary people a bigger voice in the society.
The existence of powerful political parties will lead to the “growth of understanding” in the society, Rafsanjani told the representatives of the House of Parties in the northern Gilan province.
“…various parties should encourage people to participate in the election which is the main principle of democracy,” Rafsanjani said in reference to the 2009 presidential vote.
“People’s participation (in the election) is the best way to strengthen the system in domestic and international arena. We should not let the system’s credibility be lowered in the eyes of the international community.”
Elsewhere in his talks the former president called on Iranian officials to make every effort to address people’s economic needs, Tehran Times reported.
“All officials at the Islamic system have the duty to address people’s dissatisfactions and improve the welfare of all people,” Rafsanjani noted.
People’s satisfaction is the main asset of the Islamic system, he stressed.
Rafsanjani, who also chairs the Assembly of Experts, has criticized the administration’s economic policy which has led to a deterioration of people’s economic status.
