Charges likely over Russian sub tragedy

A  Russian sailor is facing charges over a submarine accident that claimed the lives of 20 people.Prosecutors say they have opened a criminal case against a man who was on board the Nerpa nuclear submarine when tragedy struck in the Sea of Japan.

They say the sailor has admitted that he turned on a fire extinguishing system for no reason, releasing a toxic gas that asphyxiated the victims.

The funerals of some of those killed were held yesterday. About two thirds of the 208 people on board were civilians, putting the vessel through a series of sea trials.

Some media reports are questioning the official version of what happened, and there are claims that some deaths might have been avoided if more emergency air masks had been available.
