GAZA (Reuters) – An Israeli soldier was killed and three were wounded in a blast near the border with the Gaza Strip, Al Arabiya television said on Tuesday, in the deadliest incident for Israel since it declared a ceasefire 10 days ago.
Palestinians living near the Kissufim border crossing told Reuters they had seen a small group of gunmen, numbering two or three, moving toward the border fence early in the morning. They later heard explosions and gunfire.
The Israeli military had no immediate comment. Israel withholds news of the deaths of soldiers until their families are notified.
Ten Israeli soldiers were killed during a 22-day offensive that ended on January 18 following a ceasefire announcement a day earlier. Some 1,300 Palestinians were killed in the conflict.
