EULEX Asks For Patience With Serbian Police

resizer98The EU’s Rule of Law Mission to Kosovo, EULEX, has urged the country’s ministry of interior not to react to what the Prisitina’s authorities consider as provocation from Serb police until he has had the opportunity to try and resolve the issue.

For the past year, Serb policemen working in the north of Kosovo have boycotted their work in a sign of protest to the country’s declaration of independence in February 17, 2008, but have since been paid their monthly salaries without going to work.

Kosovo’s Minister of Interior, Zenun Pajaziti has said that his ministry will open a competition to recruit new policemen if the striking policemen do not come back.

EULEX’s chief Yves de Kermabon says that the EU is putting a lot of pressure to Serbia’s Ministry of Interior to solve the problem as soon as possible. According to the daily ”Koha Ditore”, he has urged Kosovo’s institutions not to take any decision until he returns from a trip to Belgrade, where he has gone in part to resolve the issue.
