Slovene President: Dispute Solvable in Few Months

With the help of the European Commission and its mediation in the Slovenian-Croatian border dispute, that issue “could technically be solved in a few months”, evaluated on Tuesday the Slovenian president Danilo Tuerk for the Arabian television station Al Jazeera.

The conversation was dedicated to Tuerk’s expectations from the upcoming G-20 meeting and overcoming the global crisis, and he talked about the economic transition of his country and the economic troubles that have caught the EU and Eurozone.

Slovenia wants Croatia’s entry into the Europe

When asked by the British journalist David Frost via video link from Ljubljana about the border dispute with Croatia, linked to the border at sea, and if Slovenia will block Croatia’s entry into the EU over that, Danilo Tuerk stressed that the European Commission proposal is current, and could lead to the solution of the dispute with Croatia and the unblocking of the negotiations could technically occur in a timeframe of a few months.

“That is a good offer and if Croatia takes it seriously and accepts it, it could solve the problem” said the Slovenian president about the European Commission mediation.

When asked if he sees Croatia in the European Union “in 12 months”, Tuerk answered that before entering the EU, Croatia must solve other open issues, like cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and the issue of its justice system, but that Slovenia “wants the entry of Croatia into the EU”.

He added that Slovenia wants and expects the entry of other “south east European” states into the EU, listing Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina and Macedonia.
