WASHINGTON
US Vice President Joe Biden encouraged Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvilli to continue outreach to opposition protesters and efforts at dialogue with the non-parliamentary opposition.
In a telephone call late on Thursday, Biden underscored the need for Georgia and Russia to exercise restraint and contribute to the stability of Georgia’s separatist regions, the Vice President’s Office said.
Biden reaffirmed US commitment to work in support of the international presence throughout Georgia, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, to address security, humanitarian and human rights concerns.
Biden — who addressed US Navy personnel in San Diego, California, on Thursday — emphasized unwavering US support for Georgian sovereignty and territorial integrity, during his talk with Saakashvilli, Biden’s office said.
