Russia’s South Stream natural gas pipeline is “weakening” rival EU-backed Nabucco, according to the European Parliament president. Jerzy Buzek also went on to say that “all bilateral deals with Russian gas exporters are threatening EU’s interests”.
According to him, the project to pump Russian gas to Europe via Bulgaria and Serbia – South Stream – represents a rival project supported by Italy and France, that is weakening Nabucco.
Buzek, a Polish conservative, told EU Observer internet bulletin that the same goes for bilateral deals with Russian gas exporters.
He went on to express his “strong belief” in Nabucco.
The EU has made it officially clear that it is not opposed to South Stream, since any means to supply gas to the European residents is “welcome”, reports say.
