U.S. delegation visits Belgrade

A delegation of U.S. senators, including George Voinovich [R-OH] and Jeanne Shaheen [D-NH], visited Belgrade on Thursday.

They met with President Boris Tadić, and called for a partnership between Serbia and the U.S.

Stressing that Serbia wants a partnership with the U.S., Tadić said that the two countries’ security services are already cooperating closely in fighting organized crime, which is one of Serbia’s top priorities for 2010.

Tadić said that Serbia’s goal is EU membership, and reminded that an application for full-fledged membership in the Union has been submitted.

Senators Voinovich and Shaheen emphasized that in the past few years Serbia has achieved significant and visible progress, and said that the stability of the Western Balkans was of crucial importance not only to the EU, but to the entire world.
