Ukrainian politicians say that Romanian would have territorial pretention upon Maican island, an element of the Ukrainian border.
“Slowly, without a war declaration, our neighbor Romania is trying to “bite””, writes Segodnea, which accuses that “a year ago Romania has sued Ukraine for a couple tens of square kilometer on the Snakes Island, in the Black Sea (which has considerable sources of oil and gas), now is trying again to take away territorial pretentions”.
According to deputy Ghennadi Zadirko, from the Yulia Tymoshenko block, these new territorial pretentions are referring to non-lived island, which is situated between cities of Chilia and Vilkovo and constitutes a Ukrainian border element. According to international law, when the border of a country is situated on a river, the border is set on the navigable side of it, unless the sides agree differently.
The navigable part between Romanian island Babin and Ukrainian Maican is blocked by mud, the circulation being made between Maican and Ukrainian bank.
Based on this an year ago Romanian talked for the first time about the possibility of moving the border, supposing that Maican would become Romanian territory, according to Segodnea.
The deputy cited by the Ukrainian publication says that there is an economical aspect of the problem, connected to Bistroe channel. If the border would be moved, the navigable corridor would become common and Ukraine would have to share the taxes with Romania. “Romania doesn’t need the island, they need the Channel (meaning money e.n.)”, said Zadirco. He suggested that Ukraine could give up in the island by her own.
Ukraine doesn’t have any plans for changing their border line with Romanian on Danube, declared on Wednesday, Ukrainian minister of Foreign Affairs.
