Integration of the volatile Balkans into European Union is key for regional stability and Brussels remains committed to it, EU president Herman Van Rompuy said.
“The European future of the region is key for its stability and the intention is that the process of EU integration clearly continues in the most effective possible way,” Van Rompuy told the Croatian daily Jutarnji List.
“The European Union has on several occasions confirmed its commitment to the enlargement process and the European perspective of the Western Balkans,” he added.
The EU president was referring to the countries that emerged after the bloody break-up of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and Albania.
“The Western Balkans region is a key priority for EU,” he stressed.
