Romanian President: As Romania’s representative in Council of Europe, I wanted to discuss with Vlad Filat

“As Romania’s representative in the Council of Europe, I wanted to have a discussion with Vlad Filat,” President Traian Basescu said on the meeting with the Moldovan Premier, held in Iasi, on Thursday, August 19.

During the meeting the two officials talked about the developments in Moldova. “We want to know how we can support Moldova in the European integration process and the Moldovan Government’s intentions,” Traian Basescu said.

Vlad Filat and Traian Basescu spoke about the implementation of the Moldovan-Romanian agreements reached during Romanian President’s visit to Chisinau in January, issues concerning the small-scale border traffic, the construction of 750 houses for the Moldovan flood victims, the provision of 5,000 scholarship for Moldovan students, the functioning of the recently opened Consulates and other subjects.

Vlad Filat thanked his counterpart and the Romanian state for the assistance provided in the European integration process. “We cover a difficult path and Romania’s support in this process is of major importance,” said the Premier. “We need the support of the European countries, especially Romania, in the talks on the liberalization of the visa regime and on the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade area and in other processes. Romania’s voice is very important to us.”

The interlocutors also discussed energy-related issues and the possibility of implementing joint projects in the energy sector as well as the allocation of the financial assistance of 25 million euros promised by the Government of Romania by the end of this year.
