Belgrade mufti calls for counter-rally

Belgrade Mufti Muhamed Jusufspahić has called on a counter-rally in response to the one scheduled by a rival Islamic organization. The Islamic Community in Serbia leader Muamer Zukorlić called the original gathering.

Jusufspahić said that his Islamic Community of Serbia has scheduled a counter-rally so that its voice can be heard as well.

He called on religious teachers and their families to attend the meeting against religious teachers who support Zukorlić.

Jusufspahić commended the moves of the Serbian government and its support for the Islamic Community of Serbia, and for including its leader, Adem Zilkić, in the government’s Commission for Religious Studies.

Zilkić has also been elected a member of the Inter-Religious Council.

Zukorlić’s supporters announced a rally in front of the government building on Tuesday at noon to pretest the appointment of Zilkić to the commission.

Zukorlić believes that his Islamic Community in Serbia’s official Mevlud Dudić was removed from the commission after he was elected as the president of the National Bosniak Council, which the Human and Minority Rights Ministry does not recognize.

Jusufspahić said that his counter-rally will be held from 10:00 to 13:00 CET on Tuesday and they will cancel the gathering only if Zukorlić’s supporters do the same.
