Catherine Ashton: Serbian President, Kosovo Prime Minister ready for dialogue

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Wednesday that the date and topics for the Belgrade-Priština dialogue are up to the sides.

“Serbian President Boris Tadić and Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci are now ready to start the dialogue,” she said answering questions of MPs in the European Parliament (EP) foreign affairs committee.

As regards the topics, the EU believes they should focus on practical issues to make life easier for the people, Ashton said.

In Belgrade, Serbian Deputy PM Božidar Đelić said that since the submission of the resolution on Kosovo in cooperation with the EU Serbia is ready for the dialogue, while early elections are expected in Kosovo.

Đelić also said that one of the first topics of the talks could be customs.

He also said that he believed there would not be “such a great asymmetry of sides” in the dialogue which he said would be conducted under the EU auspices and with the valid UNSCR 1244.

“For the first time it is obvious that European spirit is expected from Priština too, and that means compromise,” said Đelić.
