Gunther Krichbaum, head of the EU Affairs Committee of the German Bundertag, has declared in Sofia that Germany will back Bulgaria’s Schengen Area accession in the event of a positive EC monitoring report.
Krichbaum has thus affirmed the German position of making Bulgaria’s Schengen entry conditional on the progress achieved by the country under the mechanism for monitoring its post-EU-accession progress in problem areas exercised by the European Commission.
“Germany’s decision about the membership of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen will be made after the report of the European Commission on the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism is published in the summer. If the report is positive, Germany has no intention of obstructing Bulgaria’s Schengen membership,” Krichbaum said on Monday.
